IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE NEW YEAR!
New Year = New Email addresses for Howard-Suamico School District Staff
Starting December 26, 2018 all HSSD email addresses will end a new extension: @hssdschools.org and our website address will also become www.hssdschools.org. During the transition, former email addresses (ending in @hssd.k12.wi.us) will work for a limited time to receive email. TIME OUT WITH MR. MURPHY:
Hello families! Suamico is proud to partner with the American Heart Association with Kids Heart Challenge. Over the next few weeks, our students will be having fun learning about their heart with the Heart Heroes while raising money to help fund lifesaving research. Our school goal is to raise $7,500 and in addition to helping the American Heart Association, our school can earn free PE equipment. Students can earn their own Heart Hero Characters this year by using the new mobile app (download the KHC app) or by visiting heart.org/khc to sign up and raise money online! Just for signing up to save lives, your students will earn a glow in the dark wristband! PLUS this year, the mobile app unlocks even more fun and the Heart Heroes and wristband come to life! All donations are due on February 6th and our event day(s) are February 4th - 6th. Thank you for helping a great cause! |
DECEMBER- SUAMICO LITERACY NEWS:
OVERVIEW OF UNITS OF STUDY: At Suamico Elementary we utilize Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop for our literacy instruction. The first 10-15 minutes of Reader’s/Writer’s Workshop is an engaging mini-lesson, or direct teacher instruction focusing on a specific teaching point. Students learn skills and strategies that are transferable.
After each mini-lesson students will have independent reading/writing time where they will choose their own books or writing topic and have an opportunity to practice skills and strategies taught in the mini lesson. By giving the students choices, the reading and writing becomes authentic, engaging, and meaningful. During this independent time the teacher will meet with small groups and/or individuals to conference and encourage each child’s individual growth. At the end of our workshop times, students are able to share out their learning with a partner or the whole group. We spend lots of time reading and writing, sharing books, listening to read-alouds, and doing word work to help us read words and write words. Most importantly, we experience the joy of writing and see how much fun reading can be as we grow to be lifelong readers and writers. We appreciate all your support at home with building a nightly habit of reading and focusing on the joy of learning to read or reading to learn, as well as, writing for a variety of purposes. Meet our Literacy Staff at Suamico: Mrs. Kathy Pludeman, Literacy Interventionist

DECEMBER 2018 - FROM YOUR SCHOOL BOARD:
New Year, A Closer look into the HSSD School Board
As 2018 comes to a close, the Howard-Suamico School Board wants to thank you for your continued trust and support. As we prepare to bring in a new year, we want to make sure you are clear on the School Board’s role, our mission and ensure you have the visibility, aka transparency, you deserve.
School Board Role
The Board of Education acts as a whole, not as seven individuals, to ensure the success of every child through clear, concise direction to the superintendent as well as rigorous monitoring to ensure accountability. The board charges the superintendent to focus every staff member and all resources toward a single goal - student achievement. The superintendent receives direction from the board and authorizes the staff to implement practices, programs and activities that will provide the best education possible. This approach allows the Board to focus its time and energy on facilitating a successful school district.
Board Mission
The mission of the Howard-Suamico School District Board of Education is to enact policies and allocate resources to develop all students' full academic potential and to promote their social and emotional growth.
For more information about the School District and School Board, visit www.hssd.k12.wi.us. For additional information regarding this article, contact school board member Maria Lara at [email protected]. We wish you a Happy New Year!
